University of Pretoria conference on decolonising the humanities curriculum
One of the two plays I was required to produce during my residency, was for the opening of the conference on decolonising the humanities curriculum hosted by the University of Pretoria from 10-12 July 2019.
What better way to talk about decolonising the curriculum than to do a play that references Shakespeare in an African or South African context? Romeo and Julio tells of how student actors in a university production of the well-known Shakespearean play demand that if it is to be done, it should debunk the heteronormative interpretation of the play. Comedy and satire were employed to raise critical themes related to the conference topic.
