Unity Arts Festival, Tembisa

I was invited to make a presentation to participants in the Unity Arts Festival, hosted in Tembisa, on Sunday 19 May.  The topic was "Towards a new dispensation for community theatre", in which I spoke about current theatre policy and funding in the context of deepening inequality, increasing unemployment and high levels of poverty which excluded most citizens from theatre.  If the government is serious about building an inclusive society and about "social cohesion", it would change the current policies which essentially served an urban elite, to ensure that people throughout the country would have access to quality theatre, both as participants and as audiences.
