Theater fur die Welt Equity Forum
I was invited to do the keynote address and to co-facilitate a forum on global equity in international cultural collaborations that took place from 25-27 June. Originally scheduled as a physical forum in 2020 in Dusseldorf, it was postponed to 2021 and even then, much of it happened online (I participated from Cape Town). The Baxter Theatre's production of The Life and Times of Michael K was due to open the Theater fur die Welt festival but travel restrictions meant that the production was livestreamed from the Baxter in Cape Town to attendees in Dusseldorf and in other parts of the world. If anything, COVID-19 has provided us with insights into how technology can contribute to greater equity of opportunities, when visas, travel costs and security concerns often limit international participation by artists from the Global South.
