Teaching arts admin at the UFS
Having lectured on arts administration last year during my writer's residency at the University of Free State, I was invited again by Anthea van Jaarsveld, head of the Drama Department to teach a similar short course to this year's third year students. In seven lectures, we covered policy related to theatre, fundraising, budgeting, marketing and the challenges and possibilities of making a livelihood through theatre. The students were split into four groups and were given an exercise to apply their theoretical knowledge practically by applying to do a play at a festival, and devising a budget and marketing plan to go with it. Of the 18 students, 15 were women. I selected Another One's Bread as the focus of their project given that it has four women characters.
