Helen of Troyeville reading

Helen of Clifton's daughter hosts reading of play about her mom

Helen Boonzaier is one of my theatre angels!  She is a most amazing woman, in her eighties, who is an avid supporter of the arts.  She has attended numerous festivals in Grahamstown/Makhanda, which is where I met her after she and friends had come to see one of my plays.  We have been friends ever since!  One morning, over coffee, she told me about her life which inspired me to write a play - Helen of Troyeville.  It was performed in 2018 at the National Arts Festival with Gina Shmukler in the role, directed by Lesedi Job.  Ideally, it should be played by a much older actor and Diane Wilson agreed to do a reading of the script for a showing in Cape Town in August, hosted by Helen's daughter, at her house in Oranjezicht.  Diane did a superb job - such a pity that she doesn't believe that she can remember the lines, or she would have been a superb 'Helen of Troyeville'.  Nancy Richards facilitated a discussion with the audience after the show which was most insightful and generous in its response.
