Creative Industries Seminar

Future Africa Monthly "Culture and Development" seminar series

14 May played host to a seminar Culture, the Economy and the Creative and Cultural Industries as part of the monthly seminar series I'm hosting at the Future Africa Campus on the broad theme of Culture and Development.  Mashupe Phala, a director and playwright from Limpopo and Lee Walters, a doctoral student at the University of the Western Cape, served as respondents to a paper which I prepared and which essentially interrogated the relevance of the creative and cultural industries as drivers of development in Africa generally, and South Africa in particular, when conditions in the region were so unsympathetic to their existence and growth (e.g. lack of access to capital, poor or non-existent infrastructure, ineffective copyright regimes, small markets, etc).  The paper is available under "Articles" on this website.
