Community Arts Project reflection at the Zeitz MOCAA
Bearing witness to art and its role against oppression
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art hosted a five-person panel discussion with Lionel Davis, Barbara Voss, David Hlongwane, Trish de Villiers and myself on 24 January to reflect on the Community Arts Project (CAP) and its role during the anti-apartheid era. I was initially recruited to run a course for theatre facilitators and was eventually appointed Director of CAP before funding cuts - due to the changes taking place in the country from 1989 - led to a radical decline in CAP's fortunes and role. It was a good evening of nostalgic reflection, reconnecting with people from that time and engaging around the possible role of art in our current circumstances.
