Collegiate Girls workshop and public talk

Monday 22 August saw me in Gqeberha doing a drama workshop and a public talk.

Collegiate Girls in Gqeberha is studying one of my plays, Green Man Flashing.  I was invited to present a writing workshop for the learners in the afternoon and to do a talk on The Role of the Artist in South Africa that evening.  While the 90-minute workshop did not allow for much more than a few writing exercises, some of the participants produced excellent monologues for the characters they created.  The evening presentation included a screening of Some Mothers' Sons, the short film based on my play of the same name.  It was also an opportunity to meet lecturers from the Nelson Mandela University and there is potential to spend more time in the Eastern Cape next year doing workshop and lectures at schools and the university!  A thoroughly enjoyable experience made more pleasant by staying with Sharon Rother, a keen supporter of my work at the National Arts Festival together with her drama studio partner, Linda Swain.
